about

Canadian electronic musician Scott Monteith today announced he was permanently retiring his long running Deadbeat artist alias and will continue releasing and performing music in future exclusively under his own name.

“As an 18 year old making not quite dance floor electronic music the name Deadbeat was an appropriately precocious turn of phrase. For a 45 year old father of two, maybe not so much. There are a lot of Deadbeat’s in the world these days, both in the traditional English slang sense and those using it as a moniker to make everything from black metal to 2step and think it’s time I left said moniker to these younger men who are happy to employ it with a little less baggage than I’m willing to carry at this stage. ”

His first release during this new creative phase is entitled the Lichen Diaries vol 1, which, as the name suggests, will be the first in a series over the coming months highlighting the vast range of his musical interest.

“Making music for so long under one artistic moniker resulted in my being slightly pigeon holed as a dub techno artist.. I’ve made a lot of dub techno over the last 25 years and love it dearly, but I have also made a great deal of other music from techno and house, to ambient, dance hall, dub reggae, and pure noise experiments, and for a great many contexts outside of the club; theaters; films; dance performances etc. As such, I really feel going forward it was crucial to claim ownership of all of these diverse tangents, and this new series will showcase that diversity intrinsically. The decision to put my name on all of these musical experiments is incredibly freeing on many levels. I remain deeply and intrinsically creatively curious and hope that spirit endures for many years to come. Fans of my previous work need not worry, you’ll still find archival releases under their original titles and Deadbeat moniker.”

The Lichen Diaries vol 1 is available now via BLKRTZ, with worldwide digital distribution on all platforms and as a single 12 inch vinyl release in the coming months via Diggers Factory.

Comprising 6 tracks over 41 minutes, Monteith weaves together field recordings from the jungles and remote beaches of the Dominican Republic with some of the richest synthetic sound design of his career. Entirely devoid of drums, the pieces evolve, coalesce, and decay like the vast multi-cellular organisms from which the project takes its inspiration.
